Jonathan's machine was capable of traversing time but only forward. The past was immutable, but the future didn't exist yet, making it accessible—whether his machine altered said future was debatable.
He lept 300 years into the future, looking around. "What the heck?"
His house was replaced by a park as far as the eye could see.
He saw a passerby.
"What happened to all the houses?"
"Houses?" asked the stranger.
"Yes, where people live." Jonathan raised an eyebrow.
"You mean underground?"
"Underground? This is my yard! My land!"
"Such entitlement …" The stranger shook their head and walked away.
